George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, followed his dream to create a Garden City that included wide tree lined boulevards, stately civic monuments, winding roadways and lush green spaces. Inspired by the castles of Spain and Italy and the romance of the Mediterranean architecture, he gathered his design team of an architect, an artist and a landscape architect to create the blueprint for both homes and commercial buildings. That brilliant vision begun in 1921 has become “The City Beautiful†that we know today.
The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Business Profile remarks that in 1925 Merrick predicted the “City would serve as a gateway to Latin America.â€
Today, Coral Gables is home to more than 150 multinational corporations from nearly two dozen countries – many in banking, professional services, spirits, communications and technology.
As you stroll along the downtown Gables sidewalks you can choose from an abundance of shops, art galleries and over 150 restaurants and cafes that offer cuisine from around the world. Night and day the business center is bustling. A walk through the streets lined with welcoming outdoor tables and a diverse array of shops will make it clear why The Wall Street Journal named Coral Gables “The sixth most walkable suburb in the United States.â€
True to George Merrick’s vision for green space Coral Gables is nationally recognized as a Garden City and offers two world renowned gardens. Montgomery Botanical Center, a global magnet for research, boasts the largest Palm tree and Cycad collections in the world. The 83 acre Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has become a world resource. Its “Wings of the Tropics†conservatory has 3,000 butterflies on display every day. Additionally Coral Gables features 42 parks offering places to bike, picnic, play tennis or relax and enjoy the oasis. There are four golf courses including the Municipal Granada Golf Course, the oldest operating nine hole golf course in Florida.
Students travel from around the world to attend the University of Miami located right in the heart of Coral Gables. Established in 1925 during the famous real estate boom it is now a private university with more than 16,000 students in the vibrant and diverse academic community.
In Coral Gables you can relax in your serene haven amidst the towering oaks, palms and banyans and enjoy the small town atmosphere. Yet you are surrounded with cultural opportunities such as theatre, opera, dance, art and museums both in Coral Gables and nearby areas. Coral Gables residents enjoy access to a wide variety of outstanding health care.
Paradise is easy to reach as Coral Gables is only minutes from the newly enhanced and expanded Miami International Airport and only slightly further from the Port of Miami.

Many thanks to the Biltmore Hotel listed on the National Register of Historic places, for the lovely photo you see at the top of this website. The Biltmore Hotel, the City’s tallest building – with its magnificent spire that pays homage to Spain’s Giralda Tower – has hosted royalty, presidents and movie stars since it opened in 1926. Enjoy the myriad varieties of dining opportunities from casual at the Cascade by the pool, to fine Italian dining at the Fontana, French cuisine at the famed Palm D’OR and more.
Coral Gables retains an Old World Charm thanks in many ways to its discerning citizens, the strict zoning laws and high architectural standards. Home styles and prices vary dramatically in different areas. Small “Old Spanish†cottages in the north Gables begin in the $500,000 range. Around the golf courses on North and South Greenway and Alhambra Circle there are magnificent examples of the Ornate Spanish Revival, Art Deco and Art Modern styles as George Merrick and his team planned.
Further south on Biscayne Bay in the sought after gated water front enclave of Gables Estates a home just sold for $25,800,000. Located on two landscaped acres it offers boat dockage with direct access to the bay and an unobstructed view of the Biscayne Bay.
As most of the waterfront land is now built up, sellers in the coveted gated communities of Coco Plum, Old Cutler Bay, Journey’s End and Gables Estates can command high prices. Buyers can be assured of the value as there is no more land with boat dockage that affords no bridges to the bay. Gables Estates has frequently been counted among the Forbes and Coldwell Banker Previews most expensive zip codes in the United States survey.
